A Christ-like and Buddha-like Animal Liberator (Zoe Rosenberg). By Dr. Chapman Chen

DxE Organizer, Happy Hen Animal Sanctuary founder, cum UC Berkeley student Zoe Rosenberg (aka Zoe Rooster) could be sent to jail for more than 13 years just for rescuing four gravely ill and badly abused chickens from Perdue’s Petaluma Poultry Slaughterhouse and getting them veterinarian care. Zoe may or may not be a follower of Jesus or Buddha, but her actions for animal liberation, undertaken at the risk of a lengthy prison sentence, are undeniably Christ-like and Buddha-like.

For Jesus says, "I desire compassion rather than sacrifice" (Matthew 9:13, 12:7 NASB). In emptying the Temple of innocent creatures about to be slaughtered for sacrifice, and in calling the Temple-turned-butcher-shop "a den of thieves (shredders)" (Mark 11:16, Luke 20:46, Matt. 21:12-13), Jesus debunked the fraudulent business of animal sacrifice and disrupted the lucrative revenue stream of the chief priests and scribes, who immediately conspired to destroy Him (Mark 11:15-18). This eventually led to His arrest, trial, and crucifixion (cf. Keith Akers 2000, pp.117-118).

Likewise, Buddha teaches, "All tremble at violence; all fear death. Putting oneself in the place of another, one should not kill nor cause another to kill" (Dhammapada 129–130). In the Jataka Tales, Buddha and his previous incarnations are often depicted demonstrating profound self-sacrifice and compassion toward all beings, including animals. For example, in one of his previous lives, Buddha was born as a compassionate prince. One day, he came across a starving tigress about to eat her cubs out of desperation. To save them, he offered himself as food (Vyaghri Jataka).

Jesus stresses, "A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep" (John 10:11), yet many Christians take the lives of sheep or other innocent creatures of God to satisfy their own lust. Let’s support Christ-like and Buddha-like animal liberators like Zoe Rosenberg, whose trial is scheduled to begin on May 16, 2025.  (This case is obviously a deliberate persecution of animal rights activists. Rescuing badly abused animals should never be considered a crime. Even if classified as theft, how can the act of stealing four chickens translate into a potential 13-year prison sentence?)
